In the USDA Crop Progress Report released yesterday, corn planting in Illinois and Indiana has yet to get underway. The 5-year average indicates that 9% and 4% of the crop is usually planted by this time respectively. Recent heavy rainfall is the main culprit behind these sowing delays. In Illinois, Rockford received 2.24 inches of rainfall last Thursday, with a bit more falling yesterday. To the east in Indiana, Lafayette picked up 0.82” from the same event. Farmers have reported that some fields have ponded with water preventing any fieldwork. Drier conditions will be needed to allow the corn planting to begin in earnest. The Speedwell ECMWF and GFS forecasts for the US Corn East Index centered on Illinois and Indiana show chances for showers and occasional thunderstorms later this week continuing into next week, although some dry days will be interspersed.
