E-Mini S&P leveraged funds liquidated 42,000 longs and added 43,000 new shorts in the week ending September 22, widening the net short to 355,296 on an 86,000 contract swing. Nasdaq added 24,000 new shorts, and T note funds added 93,000 new shorts, pushing the net back to short 1,976,058. All three financial markets sold in the same week after several weeks of covering. Nat gas covered 32,000 shorts, pulling the net short to 66,000 from over 100,000 two weeks ago.
The S&P move came from both sides of the book equally, which is a different signal than one sided short building. Soybeans added 16,000 new longs while corn liquidated 7,000, splitting the grain complex. Copper added 13,000 new longs and covered 4,000 shorts to push the net back above 82,000. Sugar liquidated 12,000 longs for the second straight week of reduction from the net long 247,000 peak, now at 224,000. RBOB added 12,000 new longs to push the net above 96,000.
