Corn funds added 89,000 new longs and covered 37,000 shorts in the week ending August 25, pushing managed money to net long 376,513 on a 126,000 contract net change. T note leveraged funds covered 144,000 shorts, pulling the net short to 2,084,552. Sugar added 40,000 new longs and covered 15,000 shorts for the third consecutive week of 55,000 plus net change, now net long 207,082. Soybeans added 42,000 new longs to reach net long 198,254.
Corn is being driven by new longs, not just short covering, with 89,000 of the 126,000 net change coming from the buy side. Nat gas covered 25,000 shorts to pull the net short below 72,000, down from over 110,000 three weeks ago. The equity picture split again: S&P added 18,000 new shorts and liquidated 12,000 longs, while Nasdaq covered 14,000 shorts and added 6,000 new longs. Lean hogs added 5,000 new shorts to push the net short to 31,000.
